The grand trip is finished. 3,706km in 10 days. Route from Ancaster, Ontario along the 401/407 to Hwy 40 in Quebec the Hudson to Oka ferry, north of Montreal to Trois Rivieres, along Hwy 138 to Tadoussac which also involves a short ferry, crossing the St. Lawrence River from Les Escoumin to Trois Pistoles then picking up Hwy 132 to travel around the Gaspe, then home along Hwy 20 to 401/407. It was a great trip.
Today we diverted a bit as the weather was good so we took the opportunity to drive around Prince Edward County as it has become a popular wine region.
Then we stopped at the National Air Force Museum in Trenton, Ontario to see their collection of planes and helicopters. We are rather spoiled where we live as the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is so close and we often hear the planes go overhead and see the incredible Lancaster on a regular basis. But this museum is special as well, and does an excellent job of not only displaying the airplanes but also recognizing the service of men and women who have served in the RCAF over the years.
The National Air Force Museum has the only complete Halifax bomber in the world, and are actively restoring a Lancaster. There are only two airworthy Lancasters left, with 17 in total remaining of the over 7,000 originally built. This will add to the stock of Lancasters but will be a long time in restoration. The museum also has a Spitfire, Dakota, Hurricane and even a Harvard which was used for pilot training by the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan which was a huge operation run in Canada to prepare pilots, navigators, gunners during WWII. More than 131,000 air crew graduated from the BCATP from UK, Australia, NZ, and Canada. The museum.
There is an extensive collection indoors and out and the museum is well worth visiting.
