Gaspe Pensinsula

On the road again! Glad to be on the road again. (apologies to Willie Nelson)

Today was a beautiful day to start a road trip. The goal was to make it from Ancaster, Ontario to Trois Rivieres, Quebec so really just a heavy driving day. However we did manage a few highlights.

Our first stop was at the Big Apple in Colborne where we enjoyed the premium apple fritters, lovely and warm!

To avoid Montreal we took a small detour and took a car ferry across the Ottawa River from Hudson to Oka. We had no trouble getting on the first ferry, but in peak season it must be busy as there are signs on the road that indicate wait times of up to 2 hours. It is a short ferry ride, barely enough time for them to collect payment before unloading the cars.

In Oka, we stopped at a beautiful old Cistercian Abbey, Abbaye d’Oka. Part remains an active monastery but some is now rented out and we thought it would be a unique place to stay. As the store onsite was closed we don’t know if they still make cheese there.

After that we just drove the rest of the way to Trois Rivieres, checked into our hotel, and went for a walk along the waterfront. We had a good view of the bridge across the St. Lawrence, but we will continue east along the north shore as our goal is to head past Tadoussac and eventually take a ferry across.
