The final stretch home from Sault Ste. Marie

The final part of the drive was long, even though we broke it up by taking the ferry again, from South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island to Tobermory. This time we could actually see the islands and the great expanse of Georgian Bay as there was no fog, although we could see rain off in the distance.

No wildlife sightings on the final drive, however we did see a horse and buggy along the side of the TransCanada when we were stopped at a construction zone.

We were surprised to see a significant number of cyclists along the route even up near Thunder Bay. Even in good weather it would be a brutal ride with all the hills, but especially in the pouring rain. But to think Terry Fox did that route, running a marathon a day on one leg through all those hills, is very humbling. In addition to the Terry Fox monument and scenic viewpoint at the entrance to Thunder Bay there is a marker at the side of the highway near Shuniah where he had to stop his run. That stretch of the highway is called the Marathon of Hope.

We saw and did a lot on the trip, put several thousand kilometres on the car and took hundreds of pictures. Unfortunately there wasn’t any Northern Lights activity and it was too cold even for me to swim in Lake Superior, so we have some reasons to go back! Not right away though.
