Our luck continues with many things. Today a deer sauntered across the TransCanada highway in front of us, and we saw a bear watching us from the side of the highway. Good sightings and no collisions. No pictures either, but I was busy driving. Plus we have had very little rain on this trip, and when it happens it is when we are in the car between excursions and has never interfered with our activities. Let’s hope this keeps up for two more days.
The direct route home is back along the TransCanada, but we took a bit of a detour up Hwy 11 to see Lake Nipigon. The road follows along the edge of Lake Helen passing by an attractive little church St. Sylvester’s built in 1877. The church looks in reasonable shape but the priest’s house beside it is falling apart. The cemetery is still in use as we saw several recent burials.

Along the side of the highway there are rock cliffs with one section known as the Palisades of the Pijitawabik. They can be seen from many locations but there is really only one spot where you can stop and explore without trying to dodge transport trucks zooming along oblivious to the scenery.

Lake Nipigon is the largest lake in Ontario that is entirely within the province. It is huge and we weren’t really seeing the opposite shore, we were seeing islands within the lake. We didn’t see a cottage, a boat or any activity on the lake at all when we stopped for lunch at a small trailer park on the shores.

Rainbow Falls is spectacular and is the outflow of White Sands Lake as it heads to Lake Superior. A series of steps takes you from the top of the falls down to a bridge over the falls, with each turn leading to more scenic views as the falls cascade down.

The final stop was to see the beach at Terrace Bay, which we had bypassed on the outbound trip. It is cut off from the town by a Golf Course which you drive through, having come down some elevation from the highway. But it is a beautiful sandy beach with a boardwalk and lots of Muskoka chairs to enjoy the scenery, plus a beach pavilion which seemed a bit out of place. And on the side of the parking lot there are the lower Aguasabon falls shooting out into the lake.

We are going to miss these views along the drive. There are scenic viewpoints but are rarely the best views you will see. Of course having good weather helps.

You have had good weather on your travels.
