Food, glorious food

One of the many wonderful things about being in Mexico is the delicious food we are having, both at the condo and when we eat out. At the condo we always have sunset food as we have front row seats looking out to Banderas Bay. Guacamole and pico de gallo with fresh tortilla chips are our staples. Tortilla chips here are unlike any we have been able to find at home. They are thicker, tastier and not even remotely salty. The local market has terrific guacamole, but unfortunately is only open on Tuesdays so we may have to resort to making our own.

Need an extra suitcase to bring these home

We have eaten out at the beach restaurant, the local market, and two restaurants within walking distance, as we are able to dine outdoors and safely distanced. Our favourite place to eat so far is La Isla, where we always have delicious, reasonably priced meals. We start with guacamole and chips, as we never seem to tire of it. I have no pictures of our guacamole as it disappears so quickly. My chilaquiles were piled high and smothered in amazing salsa verde and came with two eggs. A perfect Sunday brunch. I ate every last morsel.

Tortilla soup is another favourite thing to have here, and is always different wherever we have it. Riviera Grill serves a particularly good tortilla soup, with a rich tomato broth and large chunks of avocado, cheese and tortilla in the middle. It was so filling, especially after the guacamole and chips that we had before, that I could not eat all of my dinner despite it being exceptional.  I had Mahi mahi served in a pastor sauce and on a slice of grilled pineapple, together with crisp baby vegetables. There was plenty left for lunch the next day.

We are in no danger of starving as we have plenty of options of places to eat out but also did a huge shopping at the local Mega store. We filled the trunk of the cab and it took 2 large carts to haul everything up to the condo. The only near disaster was it took a while before I noticed that the packer at the store was putting all the items straight into the cart, with no bags. Fortunately the cashier spoke English and understood our predicament when I explained we were taking a cab, and they sold us enough bags to hold all our supplies. Next time we will know to take bags with us.
