We were looking forward to our road trip to the US starting in 10 days, but after all the warnings about travel we decided to cancel it. Even though it does not involve air travel or any events with large crowds, it is definitely under the ‘non essential’ classification. Fortunately when we booked our hotels for the trip, we elected to book only with hotels that offered free cancellation even if their room rates were higher than others. Cancelling seemed a remote possibility at the time, but this proved to be a wise decision.
It really is quite impressive how many things are being done voluntarily in the interest of overall public health and well-being. For us, we are retired so staying home, avoiding crowds or deferring travel is relatively simple and with little consequence. For others this will have immediate impact on their livelihoods, their education, their finances, child care etc. and we can only hope this doesn’t last long.
Health care workers will bear the brunt if our precautions are not enough or were too slow. They are our heroes! Keep them safe. Do what is asked as responsible citizens to help slow this disease by limiting contact with others, staying home if sick, deferring travel and self-isolating as required. Think of it as an opportunity to make a dent in that ‘to be read’ pile of books!
A wise decision in view of the current thinking about the illness making the rounds.
