San Sebastian del Oeste, Part 5

There is lots to look at around San Sebastian but at some point we must be fed. Mario recommended a restaurant near the entrance to town, called Comedor la Lupita, which he said is popular with locals as well as tourists. As we were there on a Saturday which is a common change over day for resorts, there were very few tourists in the restaurant. The place started several years ago with good food but minimal decor but in order to attract tourists they gradually improved the facilities, fortunately retaining the focus on good, reasonably priced local food.

We opted to try the Mexican platter together with their special juice of the day, Hibiscus water. Good choices all around as we started with a pitcher of delicious juice followed by a quesadilla, then beans, rice, a beef dish, and chicken mole which is dark, beautifully spiced sauce with chilies, cumin, coriander, chocolate etc. We used the basket of tortillas to mop up every last drop of the heavenly mole sauce and vowed to learn how to make it at home. The food was so good that I completely forgot to take pictures before we devoured it.

No trip in Mexico would be complete without a stop at a tequila distillery and we had already seen Blue Agave plantations along the side of the road so knew we were in a good location. Again we were fortunate with Mario’s connections as just as we pulled into the distillery the guide was leaving to catch the bus. However Mario offered him a ride in exchange for staying and giving us the tour, which we appreciated. The family run operation is quite traditional and we heard about the importance of using only the large Blue Agave ‘pineapples’ with no additional sugar, and multiple distillations resulting in a superior tequila. Our tasting proved it was good indeed, although Oscar’s in Puerto Vallarta remained our favourite.

It was a long but very enjoyable day and we were ready to head back to Nuevo Vallarta. Our only stop on the way was to look at one of the impressive rock cuts along the highway. We were fortunate there hadn’t been heavy rains as parts of the highway have experienced mud slides, but all was good for our trip. We were pleased with our trip into the mountains.

The End!
