San Sebastian del Oeste, Part 4

San Sebastian was essentially abandoned after the depletion of the mines and the Mexican Revolution and now has few permanent residents. Parts of the town have been restored under a grant program for culturally significant areas in Mexico, designating it as a Magical town (Pueblos Magicos) which is a fabulous name for a government grant program. Some of the magic, though, involves the high portion of grant that disappears to admin rather than actual restorations.

There is a large town square with municipal offices nearby, complete with primitive jailhouse accommodations which they claim are still in use so I would suggest being careful in town. I wonder if whoever stole the miners pickax was aware of the quality of accommodation.

The beautiful Church of San Sebastian in the centre of town is open to tourists although we were admonished to ‘drive with respect’ in the church. In Mexico we often saw signs where the translation was not quite right which is often amusing, although much superior to any attempt I could make in Spanish.

As mentioned parts of town are fixed up, and you see walls that have been plastered recently, beside walls where the original clay brick shows through, complete with bones in some cases. There is a museum in town but we didn’t go through, but we made a stop at Hotel del Puente where we saw the beautiful style of home with rooms surrounding a beautiful courtyard.

Next, two very important parts of our trip. Lunch and Tequila!
